Common Name: Kangaroo Paw 'Yellow Gem'
Description:
Anigozanthos 'Yellow Gem' is a robust, clump-forming perennial native to Western Australia, celebrated for its vibrant bicoloured red and yellow flowers. The plant features dark green, sword-like leaves that form dense clumps approximately 60–90 cm in height. From late spring to mid-summer, 'Yellow Gem' produces tall, reddish stems reaching up to 1.5 meters, adorned with clusters of bright yellow, tubular flowers up to 40 mm long. These striking blooms are not only visually appealing but also attract nectar-feeding birds and bees, enhancing garden biodiversity. In Melbourne's climate, 'Yellow Gem' thrives in well-drained sandy or loamy soils and prefers a position in full sun to part shade. While drought-tolerant once established, regular watering during the budding period promotes more prolific flowering. After the flowering season, it's beneficial to cut back spent flower stems to the base to maintain the plant's appearance and encourage future blooms. An annual application of a general-purpose fertilizer after flowering can also support plant health and vigor.
