Common Name:
Aeonium 'Poldark'
Description:
Aeonium 'Poldark' is a bold and dramatic succulent cultivar known for its large, rosette-forming foliage with rich, dark burgundy to near-black leaves that deepen in colour with exposure to sun. This architectural plant adds striking contrast to succulent groupings, contemporary pots, and drought-tolerant landscapes, thriving particularly well in Melbourne's Mediterranean-style climate. ‘Poldark’ features a strong central stem and grows in a slightly shrubby form, producing multiple heads that can form clumps over time. It enters active growth during the cooler months of the year and may go semi-dormant in summer, conserving water and reducing leaf production. Though it may occasionally send up a flowering stalk with small yellow star-shaped flowers, flowering is infrequent in cultivation and usually marks the end of the rosette’s lifecycle. Best grown in full sun to part shade in well-draining soil, ‘Poldark’ requires minimal maintenance and copes well with dry conditions, making it perfect for xeriscaping and coastal gardens.
