Aeonium arboreum ‘Schwarzkopf’, commonly known as Black Rose Aeonium, is a striking succulent prized for its bold, rosette-shaped foliage in deep burgundy to nearly black tones. Native to the Canary Islands and well-suited to Melbourne’s climate, it thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils. This architectural plant forms branching stems topped with large, symmetrical rosettes that appear almost floral in shape. In late winter to spring, mature plants may produce tall conical clusters of bright yellow star-shaped flowers, creating a vivid contrast against the dark foliage. Drought-tolerant and low maintenance, this cultivar adds dramatic flair to succulent gardens, rockeries, pots, and xeriscapes. It is particularly effective when used as a feature plant or paired with contrasting silvery or green-toned succulents.
