Common Name:
Shantung Maple
Description:
Acer truncatum, commonly known as the Shantung Maple, is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree prized for its beautiful foliage, compact growth habit, and adaptability. Native to China, it is well-suited to Australian gardens, tolerating a range of soil types, heat, and urban conditions. The leaves are glossy green with a distinct star-like shape, turning vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red in autumn. Small yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by winged seeds (samaras) in summer. Shantung Maple is an excellent choice for street planting, small gardens, or as a feature tree, as it provides good shade without becoming overly large. It thrives in well-drained soil and prefers full sun to part shade, with good drought resistance once established.
