Common Name:
Gossamer Wattle
Description:
Acacia floribunda, known as Gossamer Wattle, is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub or small tree valued for its soft, weeping foliage and profuse creamy-yellow flower displays. Its fine, linear phyllodes form a feathery, cascading appearance, making it a popular choice for soft screening, informal hedging, or erosion control. Native to eastern Australia, this hardy wattle is particularly well-suited to Melbourne's climate and performs strongly in a range of soils, including poor or sandy types, as long as they are well-drained. Gossamer Wattle is especially adaptable, tolerating both full sun and part shade, and can thrive in coastal, suburban, or bushland-style gardens. Flowering occurs from late winter into early spring, when it becomes smothered in fluffy, pale yellow flower clusters that are rich in nectar and highly attractive to bees. It's also commonly used in regenerative landscaping and is prized for its ability to fix nitrogen and stabilise soil on slopes and embankments.
