Common Name:
Golden Guelder Rose
Description:
Viburnum opulus 'Aureum', commonly known as the Golden Guelder Rose, is a stunning deciduous shrub prized for its bright golden-yellow foliage and seasonal interest. In spring, it produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers, which resemble lacecap hydrangeas and attract bees and other pollinators. These are followed by vibrant red berries in autumn, which persist into winter and provide an important food source for birds. As the seasons change, its golden foliage transitions to warm orange and red tones before shedding for winter.
This hardy and adaptable shrub thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is an excellent choice for hedging, borders, wildlife gardens, and mixed shrub plantings, adding colour and texture throughout the year. Regular pruning after flowering helps maintain a compact shape and encourages prolific blooms.
