Common Name: Dawn Redwood
Description: Metasequoia glyptostroboides, commonly known as the Dawn Redwood, is a fast-growing, deciduous conifer notable for its conical shape and feathery, fern-like foliage. Once believed extinct, it was rediscovered in China in the 1940s and has since become a cherished ornamental tree worldwide. In spring and summer, its bright green, needle-like leaves provide a lush appearance, transitioning to a rich reddish-brown in autumn before shedding. The tree's bark is reddish-brown, becoming fissured and exfoliating in strips as it matures. Dawn Redwoods thrive in full sun and prefer moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils. They are tolerant of wet soils, making them suitable for areas prone to occasional flooding. While they can withstand cold temperatures, young trees may require protection from early frosts. With proper care, this species serves as a striking focal point in parks and large gardens.
