Common Name: Gorgeous Crabapple
Description: Malus x atrosanguinea 'Gorgeous', commonly known as the Gorgeous Crabapple, is a small deciduous tree prized for its ornamental features and versatility in the landscape. In spring, the tree bursts into bloom with an abundance of white flowers that emerge from pink buds, creating a stunning display. These blossoms are followed by large, crimson to orange-red fruits, approximately 5 cm in diameter, which persist into winter and are excellent for making crabapple jelly. The foliage consists of glossy, dark green leaves that may exhibit yellow and orange hues in autumn, adding seasonal interest. With a dense, rounded habit, 'Gorgeous' reaches an ultimate height of 4–8 meters and a spread of 2.5–4 meters over 10 to 20 years. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts well to various soil types, provided they are well-drained. This cultivar is an excellent choice for small gardens, cottage gardens, or as a feature tree, offering year-round interest and supporting pollinators with its nectar-rich flowers.Â
