Common Name: Leda Saucer Magnolia
Description: The Leda Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana 'Leda') is a deciduous shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 2–3 meters. Introduced before 2016 by the Xi'an Botanical Garden in Shaanxi, China, this cultivar is notable for its vase-shaped flowers that bloom in early spring, often before the foliage emerges. The blossoms display a unique coloration: yellow-green to white petals with a purple-red midvein that deepens into a purple-red base. Occasionally, 'Leda' may produce additional blooms throughout the summer, adding to its ornamental appeal. The plant thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soils rich in organic matter and prefers full sun to part shade. In Melbourne's climate, 'Leda' is well-suited, offering a striking display that heralds the arrival of spring.
