Common Name:
Lipan Crepe Myrtle
Description:
Lagerstroemia indica x fauriei ‘Lipan’ is a hardy, deciduous ornamental tree admired for its long-lasting lavender-lilac flowers, attractive mottled bark, and vibrant seasonal foliage. Blooming from mid-summer into early autumn, ‘Lipan’ puts on a stunning display of crinkled crepe-like flower clusters that attract bees and other pollinators. The foliage emerges bright green in spring, turns lush and deep through summer, and transitions to fiery shades of orange and red in autumn before falling. Its smooth, exfoliating bark reveals a patchwork of grey, cream, and tan, providing year-round visual interest.
Well-suited to Melbourne’s climate, Lipan is both drought and frost tolerant once established. It performs best in full sun and thrives in well-drained soil, making it ideal as a feature tree in residential gardens, street plantings, or commercial landscapes. With a naturally vase-shaped growth habit and good mildew resistance (a common issue in crepe myrtles), it requires minimal maintenance beyond occasional shaping. Lipan is one of the more compact tree-form crepe myrtles, perfect for smaller spaces needing bold summer colour.
