Common Name:
Sky Pencil Japanese Holly
Description:
Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’ is a striking, narrow, columnar evergreen shrub with dense, glossy dark green foliage. Its unique, upright growth habit makes it an excellent choice for adding vertical interest to gardens, borders, and container plantings. Unlike traditional holly, Sky Pencil lacks spines and has small, oval-shaped leaves, giving it a refined and elegant appearance. In spring, it produces tiny white flowers, followed by small black berries in autumn that attract birds. Thriving in well-drained, slightly acidic soils, Sky Pencil is highly adaptable to full sun or partial shade and requires minimal pruning to maintain its naturally slender form. It is an excellent choice for formal gardens, narrow spaces, and as a low-maintenance alternative to Italian cypress in small landscapes.
