Common Name:
Pincushion Hakea
Description:
Hakea laurina, commonly known as the Pincushion Hakea, is a striking Australian native shrub or small tree, celebrated for its uniquely ornamental flowers and soft, rounded foliage. Native to the south-west of Western Australia, it performs exceptionally well in a range of conditions, including Melbourne’s temperate climate. From late autumn through winter, it produces globular, red-pink flower heads with protruding white styles that resemble a pincushion—hence the name. These flowers are a rich source of nectar and are highly attractive to birds, bees, and butterflies. The foliage is a feature in itself: broad, soft, blue-green leaves with a laurel-like shape that lend the plant a lush and tidy appearance year-round. Hakea laurina prefers full sun and well-drained soil and is tolerant of drought, light frosts, and coastal exposure. It can be grown as a feature plant, hedge, or screening shrub, and responds well to pruning, especially after flowering.
