Common Name:
Tamarillo, Tree Tomato
Description:
Cyphomandra betacea, commonly known as the Tamarillo or Tree Tomato, is a fast-growing, small evergreen tree or large shrub native to South America. It produces an abundance of oval, egg-shaped fruit that ripens to red, orange, or yellow, with a tangy, juicy pulp rich in vitamins A, C, and antioxidants. The tree features large, soft, heart-shaped leaves and delicate pink to pale purple flowers that bloom in clusters. It thrives in warm, frost-free climates and performs well in Melbourne when grown in a sheltered, sunny position. Preferring well-drained soil, it requires regular watering during dry periods and benefits from annual pruning to maintain size and encourage fruiting. Tamarillos can be grown in large pots and typically begin bearing fruit within 18β24 months of planting.
